EM Records is delighted to present a disc of solo-violin works which at once acknowledges the legacy of the genre and reveals the individual composers’ responses to that legacy in the contexts of their own musical interests. Elgar’s “Études caractéristiques” are sparkling and typically detailed, owing much to Paganini’s “Caprices” for solo violin in their technical demands; while Tovey’s “Sonata eroica” is an intensely-worked exploration of the violin as a polyphonic instrument, looking back to the solo sonatas and partitas of Johann Sebastian Bach. Best-known as an executant violinist, Albert Sammons was also active as a teacher; and this recording presents a selection of his ‘Virtuosic Studies”, short pieces which combine technical rigour with drama, wit and charm.
